One-on-One with Cookson Hills

by Jenny and Jim Gast   Since the first time 7 years ago that Jim and I came to CooksonHillsCenter we were aware that this is a sacred place where God is moving among His people. We were given an opportunity to serve with our church’s team by leading a yearly week of summer Bible activities for children and youth, but all around us people were serving God in numerous ways.  The power of His love is evident in all the growth and change we have seen in the Center, the service, and the people. We felt God calling us to come and bide a while in Cookson, OK so we left Pennsylvania and stayed at the Center for 6 weeks. We offered ourselves as the ‘Honey, do” team and helped with whatever the staff asked of us. Our desire was to serve God’s servants, but we were greatly blessed by them.   One of the first things we noticed was that the staff has their priorities right. The week begins with planning and prayer not just for the CH Center but for others in mission in the OK conferences.  Each st ...

One-on-One with the Center City Thrift Shop

My name is Mary Klemencic and I am a member of Asbury and a volunteer at Asbury Center City Thrift Shop.  I would like to take a moment to inform you of our ministries in the center of Allentown.   The thrift shop is continuing our ministry to people of multi-cultural backgrounds.  We continue to help people in need who live in the city.  We still give them clothing and inform them of different agencies in the area for food and housing. There are many times when customers stop in to tell us about their families, health problems and buy something small that they can afford.  Lots of times we laugh with them and sometimes we shake our heads and wonder how someone could be so lonely or in such poor health. I think of the thrift shop in terms of a haven of safety for some of our customers. We have started a ministry with men from a state prison half-way house in Allentown. The men are half way between the prison system and going back into society. They d ...

One-on-One with Teen Haven

By Dan Crowley   I enjoy serving as a One-on-One for Asbury UMC for our connection to Teen Haven, a division of the Water Street Ministries in Lancaster, PA.  Although located in Lancaster, PA, Teen Haven is most active in Philadelphia among other cities.  As a young adult working in Philadelphia I had an opportunity to see first-hand the challenges that inner city youth face on a daily basis.  Through different volunteer activities I was able to see how difficult it was for youth to find a solid foundation from which they would have the opportunity to grow in future years.  Many youth were caught up in the endless cycle of poverty, drugs, and gangs. I then took a job outside the city and found myself involved in different activities, not the least of which was raising a family of my own.  I missed following the spiritual growth of the youth of the inner city.  Teen Haven became known to me through my younger brother Jack, who accepted the position of Executive Director a ...

One-on-One with La Trinidad

By Jeannie Muthard                                                             Perhaps you already give to charities, but God is calling you to connect personally with people who need help. Maybe my story will inspire you to be a One-on-One through AIM, like I have been for the past year. I work full-time, have a young son, and an arthritic condition. So many people have helped me throughout my life that I prayed for a way to serve others. A friend of mine prayed for me and gave me a little card that listed three ways I could serve God. One of them was being a One-on-One. I prayed about them for about a year. It took that long until I felt led by the Spirit to serve in this ...

Becoming an Asbury Mission One-on-One

Are you looking for a very special way to be in mission at Asbury? God calls us to be in relationship with him and to be in relationship with each other. At Asbury in Mission (AIM) we have established what we call the One-on-One initiative which connects members of Asbury with one of our mission partners, locally, regionally, nationally or globally. Become a One-on-One and let God lead you in building a relationship. Minimally we ask that you contact your mission partner every month or so (call, e-mail, letter or personal visit) to find out what’s going on in their ministry, what their prayer joys and concerns are, what their needs are and how Asbury can work with them in ministry. You then report back to the subcommittee chair on AIM (Dave McCleary—Local, Karl Kramer—Regional/National, or Dan Crowley—Global) and let them take it from there. If you are interested in becoming a One-on-One, please contact AIM Chairman, Charley Myers or any AIM member to find a mission ...
