Overall objective
The overall objective this scholarship is to provide opportunities to students to study internationally and to develop an appreciation for other cultures and other countries. As evidenced by the 2008 economic downturn, our economies are linked globally and this provides opportunities for us to interact with other countries and governments. Each country and each culture has something special to contribute to these interactions. By studying and working internationally, students will have the opportunity to better understand cultural diversity and bring back these learnings to the United States. It is our sincere hope that this experience will help the scholarship recipient to become a more balanced and responsible US citizen.
Requirements
The scholarship recipient must meet the following criteria:
-
A full time student in an accredited US University or College engaged in an Undergraduate or Masters Program that will lead to a formal diploma. There are no restrictions on the field of study.
-
Jr., Sr., or graduate student.
-
A citizen of the United States
-
A 3.0 or higher GPA
-
The international study must be located outside of the United States for a full semester.
-
Asbury UMC membership is preferable, but not required.
-
Recipients are required to submit a brief thank you note indicating several key learnings at the completion of their international study.
Restrictions
-
The scholarship amount will be $3,000.
-
Only one scholarship will be awarded per year to a qualified applicant (meeting above requirements) on a first come, first awarded basis.
-
Where there are multiple applicants, preference will be towards the student with the most financial need as evidenced by actual student loans.
-
If a recipient is involved in a multi-semester program, they can be considered for a second scholarship grant within a 12 month period. However, an individual student will not be able to receive more than $6,000.
-
If there are no qualified applicants in a fiscal year, the scholarship can be deferred to the following year or alternatively applicants beyond the Asbury community can be considered.
Governance & Funding
- A small committee of Asbury members will provide oversight, governance and manage the award process for this scholarship program. This Oversight Committee will include the Asbury Youth Director, Asbury Business Administrator and the Fund benefactors. Applicants will submit their request to the Asbury UMC by 31 December for consideration in the next year’s grant.
- Initial funding of $25,000 will be provided by the benefactors. Depending upon the overall success of the scholarship, subsequent funding may be provided.
- In administering the scholarship, the Oversight Committee is expected to invade the principal to fund yearly scholarship award.
Notifications
The scholarship will be advertised in the church bulletin, Cross & Flame and the church web site.

Amount of Scholarship
- The total amount of scholarship money available each year will be determined by Wachovia Bank based on the earnings of and as reported in the annual report for the Trust.
- The scholarship money will be divided among the approved applicants with preference (double shares) given to those students pursuing an education in the fields of religion, medicine, or nursing.
- Approved applicants will receive monies in each of the remaining years for their normal course of study provided they remain as full-time students in good standing in their college or university. However, the amount of scholarship will vary each year based on the number of applicants and earning of the Trust.
Payment of the Scholarship
A check will be made payable to the college or university upon submission of a copy of the student's tuition bill to the church office. The tuition bill will reflect that the student is full-time and in good standing at his or her chosen college or university.
